Artist Comment: "Fangorn Wold is a wind trio inspired by an episode in Tolkien's Ring Trilogy in which Merry and Pippin are captured by Orcs. When the Riders of Rohan attack the Orcs, Merry and Pippin escape into Fangorn Wold, an animated forest. The first theme is meant to suggest the driving, inexorable energy of the Orcs. The second theme (based on notes 3-5 of the first theme) expresses the Hobbits' longing for home. After a brief clarinet cadenza, the third theme, representing the triumphant Riders of Rohan, is introduced. The development, which is based primarily upon the first theme, includes a fugue on the inversion of the first theme. The first and third themes are recapitulated in counterpoint, and the piece closes with a short coda."
