Artist Comment: "Mirkwood March was written in 1987 and was commissioned by the Edmonton String Parents Association for the Edmonton Public School Board Senior String Orchestra. As indicated, it is for strings only and is in the form of a Patrol, a device used in British band music where the music begins very quietly then gradually increases in volume to the mid point and then decreases in volume to end as quietly as it began. To the observer it illustrates the march through Mirkwood by Bilbo Baggins and his companions. This piece has been performed numerous times by various public and private school string orchestras. The most recent performance was by the Edmonton Philharmonic Orchestra , October 28, 2001."
