Stan McDaniel writes "I would have written the prototype for my In Memoriam Tolkien suite even before Tolkien's passing since that earlier version, for small instruments, was not titled as such. The first performance of the suite was in 1977 by all-volunteer Sonoma State University music students playing at an OCTOCON sci-fi convention in Santa Rosa CA. It was in 1968 that I wrote a short piece for about 5 or 6 unorthodox small informal instruments which had in it the basic melodic form of what was later my Goldberry's Meadowdance. It was performed in that year by a few friends at the pub at Sonoma State."
